This particular coastal style is inspired by the beaches of the Northeast. We’re thinking of the sophistication of Kennedy style rather than the hot, tropical vibe of Florida (you’ll get that in a different blog). For this garden, we’re going to mix true coastal plants that can thrive in our climate as well as some that give the feeling of visiting the ocean.
The term ‘gothic’ has been used through the centuries to describe everything from architecture to literature to fashion. All of these uses inform the gothic style: the sweeping lines of vaulted arches, the ominous mystery and menace of gothic literature, and the dark colors and contrasts of goth fashion.
The Barbie movie has truly become a phenomenon, taking over our social media feeds and driving people back to the movies. If you watch the 2023 film, you’ll notice just a few notable plants in the background (Do you not watch movies to look at the plants?).
While you may envision this oasis in Florida or Hawaii, you can bring the feel of the tropics right here to southeastern Pennsylvania by planting a tropical-inspired garden!
