Introducing Gardening For Good
Here at Colonial Gardens, we believe that gardening can be a moral good. Every year we strive to realize these ideals, moving towards more sustainable business practices and working with local community partners to support the needs of our neighbors. Eric has a saying, “If we’re doing well, our community should be doing well.” In this spirit, we want to focus more on accomplishing this goal by empowering our customers to create better lives for themselves, our community, and the planet through gardening.
In 2026, our theme is “Gardening for Good.” Here are the tenets below with what you can expect:

1. Gardening for a Better Self: Gardening has proven physical and mental benefits. Studies have shown that it reduces stress, improves mood, and is even linked with a longer life expectancy. Growing your own food also improves your diet. Look forward to articles, workshops, and videos to help you improve your plant knowledge and gardening techniques. Want to start now? Check out our garden resources page.

2. Gardening for a Better Community: Gardening can connect us across generations and politics, connect us to our neighbors, and help us create a more beautiful, secure community. Trees lower temperatures in urban areas. Community gardens provide spaces for growing food for those without. Look forward to advice on how to grow food to help your local food bank, opportunities to connect with other small businesses in the area, and spaces where you can volunteer your time to create a more beautiful world. Want to start now? Check out our Community Involvement page to see how Colonial supports our community and how we can help.

3. Gardening for a Better Planet: How we manage our land, no matter how small, has an impact on the planet. We can provide habitat for local wildlife, plant trees to mitigate carbon emissions, and use eco-friendly practices to reduce our footprint. Look forward to seminars, articles, and videos about how to incorporate native plants into your garden, how to support pollinators, and eco-friendly gardening techniques. We’re certainly not perfect, but each year presents an opportunity to move closer to our goals thanks to the support of our local community.
About the logo: The monarch on the liatris is from a photo taken by staff member Beck in our native plant section. After a concerted effort to plant more native plants on our grounds, we have seen a difference in the number of butterflies over the years. Monarch butterflies are pollinators and also an imperiled species. They are a reminder that small things and small actions matter and that we are all interconnected and dependent upon each other.
